My Inspiring Art: Where Birds Take Flight on Canvas

Original bird paintings by Margaret Lukasik, capturing the beauty and spirit of nature.

Thinking of You

Waiting For My Love?

I like to paint birds in soft pastel chalk because it captures the soft and delicate look of bird feathers. "Thinking of You" was painted with my favorite, Sennelier Extra Soft Pastels.  It reminds me of the many birds I've seen that wait patiently alone on a tree branch or a fence for what seems like hours.

Sometimes another bird will appear, so I wonder if they're in love.  Or did they just meet?  I can never be sure, but it's something awesome to think about.

The behavior of birds in love serves as a reminder of the power of connection and the beauty of nature. Their devotion to one another is a testament to the strength of love, a force that transcends time and space to create bonds that are as unbreakable as they are beautiful.

So the next time you see a pair of birds together who might be in love, take a moment to  appreciate the magic of avian love and the wonders of the natural world.

Things I Consider When Painting Birds On Canvas:  My Guide to Capturing Feathered Friends With Chalk Pastels or Paint

A detailed anatomical illustration of a robin, highlighting key skeletal and muscular features. The drawing should showcase the bird's bone structure, feather arrangement, and muscle groups with clear labels and annotations. The style is scientific and informative, with a focus on accuracy and clarity. The color palette is muted and neutral, with subtle shading to indicate form and depth. Background is plain white. Technical specs: 4K resolution, high-quality rendering.

Understanding Bird Anatomy

Basic bird anatomy is important, but when painting birds through the lens of abstract realism I don't  consider every detail. I don't want to capture a photograph of birds, that's what cameras are for.  Instead I create an artistic likeness that captures my vision.

A close-up photograph of a painter's palette filled with vibrant colors inspired by different bird species. The palette includes a variety of blues, greens, yellows, reds, and browns, arranged in a visually appealing manner. Paintbrushes rest beside the palette, ready for use. The background is blurred to emphasize the colors. The lighting is soft and natural, highlighting the texture and richness of the paints. Technical specs: 4K resolution, macro photography.

Choosing the Right Palette

I spend at least a half hour gathering the right paint colors in transparent and opaque or chalk for a combination of colors that will create a story build on the symbolism, color and placement of the bird or birds within the painting.  Compliment colors are carefully used to highlight the main objects.

A macro photograph of intricate feather details on a bird's wing. The image should showcase the fine barbs, barbules, and rachis of individual feathers, with a focus on texture and structure. The lighting should be dramatic, with strong shadows and highlights to accentuate the feather's form. The color palette should be natural and muted, reflecting the subtle variations in feather color. Technical specs: 4K resolution, macro photography.

Mastering Feather Detail

My brush strokes aren't so detailed as to create perfect looking feathers, but instead to  reveal the likeness of feathers. Sometimes too much detail takes away from the story of the painting.  However, I do pay attention to texture, direction, and overlapping patterns to create a clear resemblance to plumage.
