Expect vibrant colors designed to inspire and uplift. I love soft chalk, but if vibrant colors aren't used, I find them too dull. And if a preservative spray is used to keep the chalk dust from smearing or creating power dust, the result is darker colors that don't appear authentic.

I studied how to properly preserve the chalk and safely frame my work so that the colors remain natural and vibrant, and the chalk remains safe in the frame.

Exploring the Vibrant World of Chalk Pastel Art

Imagine a close-up photograph capturing the intense, vibrant colors of soft chalk pastels. Focus on a selection of individual sticks of pastel, arranged in a rainbow gradient from deep blues and purples to fiery reds and oranges, culminating in soft yellows and greens. The lighting is crucial: use a single, strong light source from above to illuminate the pigments, causing them to practically glow. The texture of the pastels should be visible – the slight roughness, the fine powder clinging to the surface. The backdrop should be a simple, dark gray or black to maximize contrast and make the colors pop. The Allure of Pigments

Chalk pastels offer intense, unadulterated pigment, making for brilliant, light-fast artworks cherished by collectors. I use Sennelier, Unison and Pan Pastels for most of the picture. They offer lightfast pigment. Harder brands are used for the underpainting.

Blending Techniques

I use pan pastel sponges and blending tools for much of my work. I don't like the results I get from using fingers. Soft blending allows me to mix colors and to achieve dreamy, evocative scenes. I'm also able to create layered details I can't get with a paintbrush on canvas.
