California Missions

San Juan Capistrano

I was only 8 when I visitied the San Juan Capistrano Mission in Southern California. It was an amazing place, and very beautiful! Before leaving a swallow landed on my head and sat there until my grandfather took it off.  I hoped that it wouldn't leave a little gift when it left.

I never forgot that day, so I decided to make a few paintings that represent the many missions that are found in California. The one at left is the first painting of my mission series. It's my impression, not a realistic copy of the mission bell I saw as a child.

I enjoyed painting this in an extra soft pastel chalk from France.  The brand, Sennelier, is one of my favorites for soft pastel painting. I'll be adding this to my gallery.

I used 8 x 10 inch archival sanded pastel paper. However, it can be cut down to a smaller size of 7.5 by 11.5 inches for a narrower frame which I prefer for this picture. This painting also looks beautiful in an 11 x 14 inch frame with a matt 8 x 10 inches.

SIZE:  8 x 10 inches, soft chalk pastel chalk on sanded archival paper.

Price:  $254.00
